Prophecy

At the Faith Bible school, we were trained in how to prophesy! This was a part of the teaching on the supernatural, and perhaps this subject was one of the main reasons that both I and many others attended the school.

We were taught to speak out the thoughts that appeared in our minds during speaking in tongues and worship-singing. I did not become very good at that, but some of the others really ‘got going’ with their prophesying. Even if we were a bit uncertain as to where the message was coming from, we were told it was important not to hold anything back if we thought it just might be a prophecy. Otherwise, we were told, we would risk grieving the Holy Spirit, and He would stop giving us messages. If what we said was wrong, it would just fall to the ground, and those who were listening would not take any notice of it. Therefore, there was no risk attached, because only what was of God would remain. You could feel in your spirit if the prophecy was from God or not. Feeling in your spirit meant that you had a strange feeling in your stomach, either a feeling of pleasure or of discomfort, we did also compare it with the Bible. In theory, all prophecies were supposed to be tested by the Word of God as well as the feeling in your spirit. In practice the prophecies were tested by the leaders, and it was always they who decided what was right and the rest of us trusted their judgment.

You were supposed to know if God was urging you to prophesy by feeling the heart beating a bit faster, and feeling there was something you ought to say. If this happened to you, it was vital not to disobey, or you would run the risk of the Holy Spirit shutting off any communication. If you only had a few words in your mind, all you had to do was to speak out these words and the Holy Spirit would gradually give you the rest.
