Psychological Elements

In some cases, the phenomena that have been described may be attributed to psychological elements. This may be evident when expectation, relaxation, suggestion, and preparation are the key factors affecting the strength of the experiences. A hyped atmosphere and a powerful and dynamic preacher will generally cause more of these phenomena to take place. Many of us have simply expected that we should behave a certain way after having seen and heard how other people behave in the services. Some of these phenomena can be learned, at least to a degree.

The psychological element is not necessarily evil at all times. There are some powerful preachers of past generations who have caused people to experience some similar things simply by preaching the Gospel. In some cases, this may be purely psychological — like people fainting at pop concerts. It will probably not do much harm if it is not encouraged any further, and if the preaching of the Gospel remains the foundation.

However, manifestations that are caused by psychological dynamics may be detrimental if they are being encouraged. They may cause people to get into an unhealthy bondage to certain teachings and individuals. People may be so blinded by the seeming power of the manifestations, that they completely ignore the need for testing against the Word of God. The most important thing of all is that a careless assumption that these manifestations are caused by the Holy Spirit will give people a wrong concept of Who He is.
