The Bible’s Warning Against False Doctrine

In contrast to a wait-and-see-attitude, the Bible warns us time and time again about being too gullible regarding spiritual phenomena. We read phrases in the Scriptures such as: “Do not believe it!” (Matthew 24:23). “Take heed that no one deceives you!” (Mark 13:5). “Take heed!” (Mark 13:23). These Scriptures are not there without an important reason. 1

Paul is warning that false teaching will come both from without, and from within the church: “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves, men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore, watch.” (Acts 20:29-31)

False prophets have an outward appearance that looks like that of genuine prophets (Matthew 7:15-17). They will also mislead by performing signs and wonders (Matthew 24:24-25). It is not enough that someone is speaking about Jesus. The real question is WHICH Jesus they are speaking about (II Corinthians 11:4 and I John 4:2). It is not sufficient that supernatural things are happening. The vital question is which spirit is the source of what is happening. Even great signs and wonders, including healings, can originate from other sources than God (II Thessalonians 2:9-11; Revelation 13:13-14).

There are limits to what can be tolerated and considered as Christian preaching. Within these limits set by the Bible, we can overlook certain differences. An attitude of reconciliation is recommended, provided it is within certain boundaries. We can even rejoice that Christ is preached, though it may be done with impure motives; that is, provided the preaching is within the Scriptural limits. However, when dealing with things that are outside these limits, it is the duty of Christians to state quite clearly that one is dealing with false doctrines or false spirits. The Bible is quite sharp in such cases, and Gamaliel’s advice to wait and see is not applicable here.
